2020 and 2021 Congregation B'nai Shalom of Walnut Creek, CA Virtual Community 2nd Seder.
Due to COVID, we had to pivot on the dime from our successful annual in-person 2nd Seder to a virtual 2nd Seder for both registrants for the in-person Seder and other community members, as well as out of town family members of the virtual attendees.
Due to COVID, we had to pivot on the dime from our successful annual in-person 2nd Seder to a virtual 2nd Seder for both registrants for the in-person Seder and other community members, as well as out of town family members of the virtual attendees.
The goal of our club, as a relatively new club, is to offer a wide variety of quality programming to ensure that there is quality programming that is attractive to everyone. The key word is quality. We have built our reputation as a club on offering and providing quality programming. Our members, and people in the community who have attended our pre-COVID events, have become accustomed to the high standards that we have for ourselves. Our pre-COVID in-person Seders averaged about 150 attendees.
When it become apparent, unfortunately, in March 2020, that we would have to cancel our annual in-person Seder, the immediate question was, "How do we provide our CBS Men's Club Community Seder when County and State guidelines prohibit these types of religious gatherings?". The Club felt that there was a true need to offer a Seder, especially, when people could not travel locally or long-distance to be with family and friends, and for those 150 people who had registered and previously paid for what was scheduled to be a 2020 in-person Seder. In addition, we viewed the in-person cancellation of the CBS Men's Club Annual 2nd Seder as an opportunity. By being forced to cancel our in-person Seder, it opened an opportunity for those who could not come together to our in-person Seder, to not be alone, but, rather, to be together with their community, and also be with other family members, near and far, at our virtual Seder. That least piece proved to be very rewarding, as family members of our CBS community, were able to join our Seder, locally, nationally, and internationally. With an in-person Seder, we would not have been able to include family members from outside of our local community in the Seder. There was some good that came out of COVID.
In 2020, we refunded all monies paid for the in-person Seder. We scheduled and promoted our Virtual 2020 2nd Seder. People attended the first part of the Seder via Zoom, then logged off and had their home prepared Seder meal. 45 minutes later, after partaking in their own Passover Seder meal, participant rejoined the virtual Seder on Zoom. The Seder was led by our Rabbi, Rabbi Daniel Stein, and a musical accompanist. The style of the Seder was similar to our in-person Seders. The 2020 virtual Seder was both family oriented and musical in nature. The 2020 First CBS Men's Club Virtual Seder was a huge success with well over 200 log-ins, and many logins comprised of multiple people. As man people had their laptops o their dining room tables, it was clear that we had well over 500 attendees, demonstrating that we met a critical need of our community, and beyond.
Because COVID has been around for 12 months, and it is still not possible to resume our in-person Seder in 2021, we are taking the successes of our 2020 Virtual Seder, and adding a food component to the virtual Seder, something that was not possible in 2020 due to the quick and unexpected pivot from an in-person Seder to a Virtual Seder. For 2021, we are partnering with Oakland Kosher Foods to provide all inclusive catered Seder meals complete with Seder plates. We are offering these meals at cost. The can be picked up at our synagogue on the Friday afternoon before Passover staffed by CBS Men's Club volunteers, or a direct home delivery can be requested for an additional fee. Adding the food component akes the virtual Seder a complete "turnkey" event, like our previous in-person Seders. There is no cooking, no clean up involved. You just come (logon) to the event and enjoy! Please note that he food is voluntary. Whether you purchase Seder meals from Oakland Kosher Foods through the CBS Men's Club, or not, all desired participants are welcome to attend the Virtual 2021 Seder, as is always the case. The 2021 Seder will mirror the 2020 Virtual Seder in that it will be family oriented and musical. The major change from 2020 to 2021 will be that 2021 Virtual Seder will be more participative, allowing our Seder "guests" to lead certain readings and parts of the Seder.
