The first event for our new walking club activity was to parallel a self-guided walking tour of downtown Rockville's Historic African-American sites with our synagogue's racial Equity and Black Lives matter initiative. This program consisted of (1) the walking tour and (2) a zoom discussion held four days later with the Peerless Rockville Historic Preservation Museum. The walk took place on November 8th and the zoom talk was held on November 12th, 2020.
The Walking Club: A walking tour of African-American History in Downtown Rockville.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2020
11:00 AM TO 12:30 PM
The Men's Club invites you to participate in a walking tour of African-American history in Downtown Rockville. The walking tour documents the people and places in the core of downtown Rockville that played significant roles in African-American history through 19th and 20th centuries. The tour touches on the historic themes common to the African American experience such as slavery, education, emancipation, religion, commerce, and civil rights. This Walking Tour is limited to 25 participants. Those interested are asked to preregister to Steve Goldberg (smgold999@gmail.com) by November 6th in order to receive detailed information about this self-guided walk and tour. You are also welcome to take this tour at your on leisure at a time more convenient to you. Steve can give you the information if you decide to do the tour on your own.

Speaker Session on the African-American History of Downtown Rockville
THURSDAY, NOVMEBER 12, 2020
7:30 PM TO 8:30 PM
The Men's Club invites you to join us on for this Zoom event on the African - American History or Downtown Rockville. We will hear from Ms. Miriam Bunow representing Peerless Rockville, who will be speaking about the rich African-American History in Rockville. She will provide important details of the many African-American sites located in Downtown Rockville. Since Rockville’s formation as the county seat of Montgomery County, African Americans have figured prominently in the history of this city. This talk is a follow-on to the Men's Club Tour of Downtown Rockville held on November 8th. It is not necessary that you participated on the Walking Tour in order to hear this presentation from Ms. Bunow. Peerless Rockville is an award-winning nonprofit, community-based organization founded in 1974 to preserve buildings, objects, and information important to Rockville’s heritage. Peerless Rockville advances its goals through education, example, advocacy, and community involvement. We ask that anyone interesting in participating to please preregister to Steve Goldberg (smgold999@gmail.com) by Noon on November 12th.

(Please note: the descriptions of the programs above were originally sent as part of our Men's Club communications to our members.)

At the end of our tour we paused to engage members of the Historic Jerusalem-Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, on the steps of the church (see photo), in a discussion of their historic roots in the community.

This was our first in-person activity since March 2020 and was done with respect for COVID community safety standards.

Self Assessment
This program was specifically created to supplement our synagogue's initiative to interact with the black community and discuss with them their issues and concerns. It had a big impact on those that participated (limited because of COVID) and we are looking forward to bringing it to our Talmud Torah students in safer times.
This program was a huge success (see above) from an educational standpoint. We hope to do more of this type of community building in the future.
The FJMC mission of involving ALL JEWS (not just men) in Jewish life by community interaction was successfully fulfilled with this program.
