Health and wellness programming has always been an important part of the Beth Shalom Men’s Club. In past years we would always have two or three programs planned per year. In the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 years we planned a combined total of eleven programs and executed eight as two were cancelled due to COVID-19 and could not be rescheduled.

It was important to us that these programs be diverse and not only address different conditions people may have at various ages in their lives, but also address real time conditions that are affecting everyone.

All of these programs are on Sunday mornings and involve breakfast when held at the Synagogue pre-COVID-19.

Self Assessment
Our Congregation looks forward to the Men's Club being a major creator of Synagogue life. This expectation is not only fulfilled by our involvement and support of Synagogue programs and activities, but also in the quality of the programing we present.

Congregants of all ages are interested in health and wellness and we have responded aggressively. Our programing addresses current health issues of concern as well as universal concerns such as heart health. Heart issues are a concern of congregants of all ages, men and women. That is why two of our programs address heart health.

Our Health and Wellness programs were very successful over the past two years. Participation ranged from 25 participants to 70 per program, which is typical for our Sunday morning programing. It should be noted that there was an increase in participation for the programs presented via ZOOM. Post COVID-19 we will have the programing in person and available through live streaming to maximized participation.

We have a reliable year to year membership between 390 and 440. Our main concern is to attract younger men to join us in leadership and our health and wellness programing does this by providing credibility.
Many of younger Members and Board Members do not have the time to take on more involved leadership positions. Committee participation under the Vice President of Programs, where our Health and Wellness Programs are developed, has been a way for younger men to get involved and see the results of their work. In most cases this leads to taking on more involved leadership positions in the future.

What do you do when you have two Men's Club programs on the same day? On April 18. 2021, we had our second heart heath program via ZOOM and our Spring Blood Drive at the Synagogue. After meetings with the Synagogue IT and Building Staff, we were able to broadcast the ZOOM program into the Blood Drive using our video system and the overhead sound system. Blood Donors were able to participate in the program while waiting to donate blood and while resting after donating. This doubled the participation of this program.
