This program's aim is to give meaning to the life of a child who was murdered in the Holocaust. We want to change the abstract concept of 6,000,000 who died, to a single child, by learning about that child and saying Kaddish and Yizkor and lighting a candle on appropriate holidays and Yom Hashoah. Our goal is to have all of the children who died in the Holocaust remembered by someone who will light a candle and say Kaddish and Yizkor for each of them.

6,000,000 Jews were murdered in the Shoah. 1,500,000 of those were children, most of whom have no one to say Kaddish and Yizkor for them. Yad Vashem maintains a database that contains not only the names of Holocaust victims, but in many cases, date and place of birth as well as date and place of death. We acquire names of children from the Yad Vashem database and assemble a testimonial with the information available for each child. Names and testimonials are numbered and cataloged to prevent duplication. Participants in the program sign an agreement that they will, to the best of their ability, say Kaddish and light a Yahrzeit candle in memory of their assigned Holocaust victim, on the 4 days of the year that Yizkor is said, and on Yom HaShoah. They then receive a fact sheet about their assigned child, a certificate suitable for framing and a wallet reminder card listing upcoming dates to say Kaddish and light a candle. They also receive a donation card, in case they wish to make a donation to help us continue to run this program. There is never a charge for participation in this program – our goal is to have as many children of the Holocaust remembered as possible. The program is funded strictly by donations.

Self Assessment
60-70 members of our Temple are participating, and about 200 total in our community. We have involved Orthodox, Conservative and Reform congregations in this project, and would like to make it a nation-wide program.
The program encourages participants to remember a child who was a victim of the Holocaust by lighting a candle and saying Kaddish and Yizkor 5 times a year.
