The L'Chaim fund was established by Adath Israel's Brotherhood to support special needs of it's members, Synagogue Members or of the community. Disbursement of funds are at the discretion of the Brotherhood as long as they meet the criteria. This allows raising tax deductible contributions to and cause the Brotherhood support. Ravid Sulam is one of these causes.
Ravid Sulam, and Israeli, was burned over 90% of her body when she was 2 1/2 years old. The burns were 3rd and 4th degree and was hospitalized for 1 1/2, on a ventilator, and fused in a fetal position. Her ears, nose, hands, fingers were severely damaged. With little hope of improvement, the Sulam family approached Rabbi Avraham Firer, who is considered the leading medical expert in Israel. He immediately contacted the Shriner's Burns institute in Cincinnati, who agreed to take Ravid.
The Sulam family traveled to Cincinnati, essentially with the clothes on their back along with monies raised in Israel. Ravid needed at least 18 months of surgery and living expenses. The L'Chaim fund was approached to help. They purchased a van as a gift to the Sulam family.
When it became apparent that the Sulams needed to be in Cincinnati for much longer than 18 months, we needed significant donations from the community. Ideally these donations could be made tax deductible. The Brotherhood stepped forward and said to use the L'Chaim Fund. The also asked for the support of the Synagogue Rabbi and Office Staff to receive monies. Over six figures were raised with the help of the brotherhood and L'Chaim fund.
Shriner's has done miracles for Ravid. They have been in Cincinnati for 4 years, in part due to the use of the L'Chaim fund and Adath Israel's staff.
