Yom HaShoah / Yellow Candle

Page 1

The cost of mailing the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candles was becoming prohibitive. We needed to find a cost effective way to continue to distribute the candles to every congregational household.
Traditionally, Kol Rinah mailed Yellow Candles to each household in our congregation. But the cost of postage was becoming so prohibitive that the money we raised barely covered the cost of postage. Then one of our members asked the question, "Why don't we distribute the candles with the mishloah manot bags?" Eureka! Kol Rinah's membership committee has a crew of volunteers who deliver mishloah manot bags each year just before Purim. We approached the committee about including the Yellow Candles and our supporting materials. They were more than accommodating and they gained more volunteers for deliveries and for packing the mishloah manot bags.

The bottom line is that we were able to insure that each congregational household received a candle at no cost to our Men's Club, the membership committee gained more volunteers and the spirit of collaboration glowed. And our net fundraising greatly increased. Over the last three years we have netted nearly $6,000, which we use to help send Kol Rinah youth to programs in Israel.

Self Assessment
We were able to insure that each congregational household received a candle at no (delivery) cost to our Men's Club, the membership committee gained more volunteers and the spirit of collaboration glowed. And our net fundraising greatly increased. Over the last three years we have netted nearly $6,000, which we use to help send Kol Rinah youth to programs in Israel.
Our men were able to continue for our congregation the mitzvah of remembering the Holocaust and the loss of the 6 million through the Yellow Candle program while finding an INNOVATIVE way to fulfill the mitzvah.
I feel that the bringing together of the Men's Club and shul membership committee was significant. It got more people and diverse groups together. They have fun working on the assembly lines for stuffing the mishloah bags and Yellow Candles. And the glow of fulfilling the mitzvot is apparent.
